The South Korean forward opened the scoring chance in the 14th minute when Denis Bouanga netted, and Son supplied the decisive pass. He then broke his personal dry spell in the 38th minute, finishing a lofted left‑footed pass with a right‑footed strike. The goal was his first in eight MLS and Leagues Cup matches since his fourth‑league goal against Vancouver Whitecaps on 2 August.
Son’s assist moved him level for second place in the league’s assist leaderboard, tied with Lionel Messi’s 12 assists. The match also marked Son’s continued dominance over Real Salt Lake – he has now scored in all four MLS meetings with the club, accumulating six goals and three assists.
Real Salt Lake responded quickly, equalising through a rebound in the 75th minute, and later forced a last‑minute goal‑line clearance by veteran defender DeAndre Yedlin.
