Media Kampung, Zandvoort – British Mercedes driver George Russell secured pole position for the sprint race at the Dutch Grand Prix on Friday, August 21, 2026, and light‑heartedly blamed the loss of his engagement ring for the extra speed.
The 23‑year‑old set a lap time of 1:11.567, edging Lando Norris of McLaren by just 0.041 seconds. Charles Leclerc finished third for Ferrari, while rookie Kimi Antonelli took fifth despite earlier damage to his floor. Lewis Hamilton, Russell’s teammate, could only manage seventh.
Russell, who announced his engagement to Carmen Montero Mundt two weeks earlier, joked over the team radio, “Nice one! Must be a bit lighter after that engagement ring.” He later explained that shedding the literal weight helped him focus on shedding mental baggage, saying he approached the weekend as if it were the first race of the season.
The pole comes after a challenging first half of the year for Russell, who last won at the Austrian Grand Prix in June and struggled with software quirks affecting Mercedes’ energy deployment. He expressed relief at the strong performance, noting the car felt “really good” and everything “came together nicely”.
With the sprint qualifying completed, the main qualifying session tomorrow will determine the grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix, where competition from McLaren, Ferrari and other rivals is expected to be fierce.
