Media Kampung – RuneScape, the long-standing MMORPG, is set to unveil a new character type known as ‘Reignited,’ which aims to provide a fresh start for players. However, this initiative has sparked concerns among the existing player base regarding potential fragmentation within the community.
The announcement, which has drawn comparisons to other MMORPGs like World of Warcraft Forever, suggests that players will begin their journey anew, free from the burdens of past progress. This new character type will not be an overhaul of the game but rather an addition to the existing RuneScape 3 (RS3) platform.
Players adopting a Reignited character will start without any previous accomplishments and will share a separate economy. They will have the option to play on both existing worlds and new, exclusive Reignited worlds. While these characters can interact socially and form clans with regular players, they will be unable to trade or engage in combat with each other.
Concerns have arisen from long-time players who fear that this new character type could dilute the game’s community. As one Reddit user pointed out, players who have invested thousands of hours into the game may feel that their efforts become less significant with the introduction of a fresh start for new players.
While Jagex, the game’s developer, has stated that no new updates will be exclusive to Reignited characters and that both veteran and new players will be on equal footing, skepticism remains. Many players express that the introduction of this new character type could lead to a further fragmentation of an already dwindling player base.
Despite these concerns, the new character type has the potential to attract newcomers to RS3, especially those hesitant to start in a game with such a long history. Time will tell if this gambit will breathe new life into RuneScape 3 as it prepares for the upcoming RS4 and continues to compete with Old School RuneScape (OSRS), which is adding new features at a steady pace.
This move represents a significant shift in how Jagex is approaching its player base and the legacy of RuneScape, emphasizing the need to balance the desires of long-standing players with the necessity of attracting new ones.
