Media Kampung – 01 April 2026 | Azerbaijan confirmed its diplomatic engagement with Belgium as both nations discussed regional security and cooperation within the EU framework.
Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prévot spoke by phone with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, expressing solidarity after a drone launched from Iranian territory struck Nakhchivan.
The ministers also thanked each other for facilitating the evacuation of Belgian citizens from Iran during recent cross‑border operations.
Between 28 February and 31 March, Azerbaijan coordinated the evacuation of 3,146 people from Iran, including 551 Azerbaijani nationals and dozens of foreign citizens.
The operation was prompted by escalating military actions after strikes by the United States and Israel, which raised tensions across the region.
Azerbaijani authorities reported that evacuees originated from Turkey, Serbia, Sweden, Australia, Ukraine, Qatar, Norway, Nepal and other countries.
While managing the humanitarian response, Baku continued to highlight its internal security record, citing the Global Terrorism Index 2026 that placed Azerbaijan among the world’s safest nations.
The index assigned Azerbaijan an index of 0.123, ranking it 93rd out of 100, a modest improvement from the previous year.
Analysts noted that the low score reflects effective counter‑terrorism policies and robust security institutions despite the country’s location in a volatile region.
President Ilham Aliyev reiterated that security remains the top priority for the state and its development agenda.
Parallel to security efforts, Baku accelerated its economic diversification by launching a 23‑hectare solar panel manufacturing plant in the Alat Free Economic Zone.
The facility, built with international partners, aims to produce panels for export to Europe and neighboring markets, reducing reliance on oil revenue.
Officials emphasized that the plant will create a high‑tech industrial cluster, attracting related industries such as wind‑turbine component makers.
Local engineers will gain exposure to advanced manufacturing standards, strengthening Azerbaijan’s workforce for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The solar project aligns with Azerbaijan’s role as host of COP29, showcasing its commitment to green transition and regional energy security.
In the post‑conflict arena, the government advanced the Great Return program, focusing on reconstruction of liberated territories in Karabakh and East Zangezur.
More than 22 billion manats have been allocated for infrastructure, housing and social services, enabling over 75 000 residents to return.
Demining operations cleared vast areas, allowing civilian settlement and the development of modern utilities and digital connectivity.
A key component of the revival is the Agdam Industrial Park, a 190‑hectare complex that hosts construction‑material, food‑processing and high‑tech firms.
The park already created around 1 000 permanent jobs and attracted investments close to 150 million manats, signaling a shift from reconstruction to production.
Azerbaijani officials view the industrial park as a model for sustainable post‑war growth, reducing import dependence and fostering regional employment.
Together, the diplomatic outreach, humanitarian evacuations, security achievements and diversification initiatives illustrate Azerbaijan’s multifaceted strategy to enhance stability and prosperity.
