Media Kampung – 20 Maret 2026 | Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore have aligned with Indonesia to celebrate Idul Fitri on 21 March 2026, synchronising the four MABIMS nations for this year’s festive day.
The decision was announced after astronomical observations on 19 March showed the new moon (hilal) was not visible in the region.
Authorities applied the MABIMS visibility criteria, which require the moon’s altitude of at least three degrees and an elongation of 6.4 degrees.
Indonesia’s hisab seminar reported hilal altitude between 0.91° and 3.13°, while elongation ranged from 4.54° to 6.1°, both below the prescribed thresholds.
Because elongation did not meet the minimum, rukyat failed at all monitoring stations, leading officials to adopt istikmal and declare Syawal for 21 March.
Dirjen Bimas Islam Abu Rokhmad explained that the absence of a visible hilal forced the early Syawal announcement for that Saturday.
Brunei’s government, via Borneo Bulletin, confirmed the same date, citing identical observational results.
Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Affairs (JAKIM) also issued a statement that Aidilfitri will be observed on Saturday, 21 March 2026, following the MABIMS decision.
Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower listed the public holiday on 21 March, matching the consensus of the MABIMS forum.
The coordinated announcement reflects the long‑standing MABIMS forum, created in 1989 to harmonise Hijri calendar calculations among the four nations.
Other ASEAN members, including the Philippines, have mirrored the decision, with Bangsamoro Mufti Abdulrauf Guialani confirming the same date after local rukyat attempts failed.
The unified date aims to facilitate cross‑border travel, trade, and family reunions during the festive period.
Indonesian officials noted that while some groups, such as Muhammadiyah, initially proposed 20 March, the national decision respects the scientific assessment and promotes unity.
Observers highlighted that the joint approach reduces the risk of divergent celebration dates that could disrupt regional logistics.
The announcement concludes a week‑long observation phase and a series of inter‑ministerial meetings that finalised the decision on 19 March.
As Ramadan enters its final days, Muslims across Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines will prepare for the upcoming Idul Fitri on 21 March 2026.
